AN INTRODUCTION TO FUR BONDAGE

Do you ever see someone walking around in a soft and furry suit that looks like a cartoon character or animal and you are not in Disneyland at the moment? Then it may be that you are dealing with a furry! These people feel related to the anthropomorphic animal on which the suit is based. There is even an entire community behind it: the furry fandom. We tell you all about furries.

What is a furry?

Furries (or furs) are people who hoist themselves into an animal suit. These suits are also called fursuits. Furries do this because of their predilection for anthropomorphic animals. You often encounter such animals in comic books, games, cartoon characters or as a mascot of a company. These anthropomorphic animal characters have human personalities and character traits. For example, they have human intelligence and facial expressions, can speak, walk and wear clothes. Furries are inspired by these cartoon animals. They are people who identify with a cartoon character. They are ordinary people with an extraordinary interest in anthropomorphic animals. They like to walk around in a fursuit of the anthropomorphic animal he or she feels related to.

Fursonas

A fursona is a contraction of furry and persona. A fursona makes clear what the assumed identity of a furry should represent. Fursonas are very diverse, just like the furries themselves. In some cases it is a whole series of data, but often it is only a simple description of the anthropomorphic animal with which the person in question feels related. This makes it easy for other furries to identify what kind of animal it is and what its characteristics are. Your fursona has its own name. An example: you are a furry and you identify yourself with an animal, say a wolf. You have in your mind how old that wolf is, whether it is a male or female wolf, what the wolf’s characteristics are, how old the wolf is and what the preferences of ‘your’ wolf are.A person can have multiple fursonas and therefore multiple aliases.

Fur art

The art is very important within the furry world. If the furry has a suit, then this suit is inspired by the art of the fursona. The art is a drawing of the fursona. A fursuit is therefore completely original and based on the fur art.

Fursuits

Fursuits consist of a full suit or just a head, tail and (hand) shoes in the form of legs. The costumes are worn so that the furry can identify with the anthropomorphic animal or simply entertain people and have a fun day. Did you know that fursuit is seen by many as a form of cosplay? So it certainly does not always have a sexual aspect.

There are two types of fursuits. You can easily tell them apart by looking at the head. You have the ‘toony furry’, which most closely resembles a cartoon character. Often this fursuit has flat eyes and no teeth. You also have a ‘realistic furry’. As the name suggests, this is more of a more realistic suit, including glass eyes and fake teeth.

Wearing a fursuit is not mandatory. Not all furries therefore wear fursuits. That is because they simply do not like it or because such a suit is very expensive: between one thousand and four thousand euros, but it can amount to much more. Most fursuits are manufactured by specialized fursuit makers or by furries themselves. On the internet there are more than enough manuals on how to make a fursuit yourself, but it is still not an easy job.

Apart from the cost and effort, the suit is also warm. Some people wear cycling clothes underneath. As a result, no sweat gets into the suit and they stay cool because air gets past the clothing. There is also another trick against this inconvenience: the EZ Cooldown. It is a kind of bodywarmer with thin mesh that keeps the body cool because it contains cooling elements that release cold. This is specially designed for fursuiters and cosplayers by a Dutchman who is also a furry. What an outcome!

Lifestyle

One can think of furry as a hobby or pastime, but for many it is a lifestyle. In some cases, the furries want to be the anthropomorphic animal forever and don’t want to be seen as human. How active a furry is varies greatly from person to person. Most furs are in contact with each other via the internet. The furry fandom has an international character. Online, they often engage in multi-user role playing (MUCKs or MUDs).

Furry events and conventions

The community behind furries is called the furry fandom. The furry fandom, also known as furrydom or fur fandom, refers to the community of artists, writers, roleplayers and furry fans in general. All kinds of events and conventions are organized where furries hang out, talk and party. You first get to know a furry by his or her nickname. So that is the name of their character and here you also address them. In the Netherlands there are roughly two furry groups, in which everyone knows each other.

Some of the events and conventions are the Furry Weekend Holland, Eurofurence, Confuzzled, Furry Weekend Texel and FurRave. You can also register on the Furaffinity, the online community. Furries mainly talk about being furry. Some think it’s just a fun dress up party, but most of them are busy around the clock day and night. They prefer to be the animal that depicts the suit. When you’re at a furry party for the first time, don’t be surprised when ‘crazy’ things happen. Someone in a dog suit can suddenly start licking their own anus. That’s normal for furries. You also do not have to look up when people slosh their beer from a drinking bowl.

Sexual aspect

Furries are often the subject of ridicule in the outside world. Few people can move in the furries, so many furries do not dare to come out. In addition, a distorted view of the furry fandom has emerged in the past. According to rumors, the furry fandom would mainly focus on the sexual aspect. For many furries, it is more about identifying with the anthropomorphic animal than about sex. In addition, most furries don’t have sex in their fursuits, as they are afraid of damaging or getting the suit dirty.
