Much has already been known and written about subspace, a mental state in which a sub can find itself through the BDSM game played. But not only a sub can fall into such a trance: the Dominant can also reach this mental state. Read everything you need to know about Domspace in this blog article.

What is a Domspace?

A Domspace is a mental state in which the Dominant can feel very special, in a trance or very alert. It can bring a feeling of ‘high’, just as a sub can experience it during subspace. A Dom can reach such a state of mind during or after a scene, becoming aware of his or her qualities as a Master or Mistress and witnessing what unlocks the game with his or her submissive.

Domspace is characterized, among other things, with a deep involvement with the sub, a ‘high’ feeling and a very high degree of emotional connection with the submissive. Also a high degree of excitement and the thrill of power can come under Domspace.

The more a sub can experience the different phases of subspace, the more a Dom can go through similar transitions of phases to achieve an unprecedented, deep Domspace.

The different phases of Domspace

Just as a sub can experience different phases to subspace, a Dom grows in the game towards Domspace. Different phases are distinguished here.

1. Bottom space

At this stage, the Dominant is still in a “normal” state. So it reflects the normal, daily behavior of a person acting like Dom during a BDSM game.

2. Pre-dom space

Once the game starts, there will be a dynamic between the Dom and his / her sub. The Dominant will slowly assume the role of Master or Mistress. He or she gets the sub in sight and pays attention to the division of roles between him / her and the submissive. At this point, there is not yet a very strict relationship between Dominant versus submissive. The Dom will order and enjoy assignments and actions, but the sub can still resist this.

3. Tease and Test space

In this test phase, the Master (es) moves more towards the Dominant role. He or she will gauge whether the role of Dominant feels good and safe to handle. The sub can also test the Dom at this stage if he or she can handle this role. For example, a submissive can deliberately disobey orders to test whether the Dom is able to correct and / or punish the sub.

4. Dominant space

In this phase the Master (es) actually comes to the level of true Dominant. He or she is the sub master and this Dom clearly radiates to the sub. This is also the moment when the Dom is very attentive to and aware of the mood of the sub. The Dom has complete control over the submissive, the sub himself has completely relinquished this control. The more important is the Dom’s alertness and empathy.

5. Primal space

The Primal space represents the phase in which the Dom can feel an animal power over the sub. The Master (es) can turn into a true predator that is completely focused on his or her prey: the sub. This can be a dangerous phase, in which the Dom can shoot too far in his / her role and thereby lose his own control. It is imperative that the Dom values the principles of BDSM in value: trust, voluntary, safe and responsible.

6. High space

The highest achievable phase of domspace is the High Space phase. In this phase, the Dom will experience the ultimate ‘high’ feeling by having full power over someone else. A Dom in High Space feels the dominance flowing to every cell of his body and knows how to translate this to his sub with a single glance, while the Master honors the rule of the BDSM game. Many Dom’s feel like ‘God’ at this stage and can thoroughly enjoy the successful game they have led. The sub will be in optimal subspace, which can then be seen as an honorable achievement. It is therefore not unprecedented that in this phase the mutual bond between Dom and sub manages to reach its peak.
